NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Brandon Wai '07 was recently selected to play in the 2006 Division I Men's Individual Tennis Championships, which will be held May 24-29 at the Taube Tennis Center in Stanford, CA. Wai will be one of 64 players competing, and was one of 12 players to receive an automatic bid based on his performance in the 2006 season.
Wai, who went undefeated in Ivy League singles play at No. 1, was the only Ivy League player selected to compete in the singles portion of the Championships. Four of the seven wins came in three sets, and in addition to his impressive league record, Wai was 19-0 against Northeast Regional opponents for the 2005-2006 season.
"Brandon had a great year," said Cary Leeds Head Coach Alex Dorato. "He is one of the most mentally tough players I have ever coached - even on his off days, he finds a way to win."
Dorato also noted that Wai's conduct on the court extends well beyond just his tennis game, making him a fitting choice for team captain next year.
"He's one of the finest sportsmen I have ever coached," Dorato said. "He never loses his cool on the court, and he doesn't get caught up in gamesmanship. He just lets his racquet do the talking. For this reason, he is admired by his teammates and respected by his opponents."
