Caldwell Makes ITA Rankings Debut

Dec. 19, 2006

Yale's No. 2 singles player, sophomore Michael Caldwell, made his debut in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) regional rankings December 8. After an impressive fall season, Caldwell was ranked No. 20 in the fall edition of the ITA rankings. Yale's No. 1 singles player, Brandon Wai, was ranked No. 4 and Yale's No. 1 doubles team, Wai and Rory Green, were ranked No. 10 for doubles.

Caldwell attributed much of his success to his hard work in the summer.

"What was really important to me this summer was conditioning," Caldwell said. "A big part of that was biking actually. I biked a lot and did that every day. Another very important part of tennis is footwork. I had a coach I worked with to do different drills on the court. I feel like I was a lot more explosive on the court this year."

Caldwell's impressive fall season was highlighted by a 7-6, 6-3 victory over Princeton's No. 1 singles player, Peter Capkovic, in the ITA Regional Championships.

"I went in there after having some pretty good results in the fall," Caldwell said. "I had the ability on any given day to beat anyone in the tournament. So I walked in there with that mindset for this tournament. I had nothing to lose."

Caldwell said he looks forward to continuing his success as the spring season approaches.

"Being ranked as a sophomore is obviously a pretty big accomplishment in my book," Caldwell said. "I'd be motivated anyway, but it kind of shows me what I'm capable of. It makes me want to work harder over the break and come back in as good a shape as I was over the fall. This also shows me what we are able to accomplish as a team. We have a shot of winning the Ivies because we are a pretty deep team."

Yale resumes its season January 26 at the Columbia Invitational in New York.
