Bulldogs Continue to Perform at BU Terrier Invitational
Distance Squad Qualify Four for IC4As
BOSTON – The Bulldogs tacked on more IC4A-qualifying performances at the Boston University Terrier Invitational on Saturday. Although the meet was not scored, they had the chance to compete against a packed field of Northeast schools they will later face in the season.
As many of the distance runners are getting back into race mode, several broke the IC4A-qualifying standards. Standout middle distance runner senior Chris Labosky won his heat and took fourth overall in the 800-meter run in 1:51.70, well below the IC4A-qualifying mark of 1:54.90. Senior Kevin Brown fought for fourth in the 1,000-meter run in 2:28.35, beating out John Turro of Dartmouth by two-hundredths of a second and qualifying for the IC4As. The Bulldogs also qualified two runners for the IC4As in the 5,000-meter run, junior Max Walden who placed 14th (14:24.26) and senior Alex Harris who placed 23rd (14:45.86).
The sprinters also returned solid performances. Senior David Soiles placed sixth in the 500-meter dash in 1:05.49, nearly qualifying for the IC4As by less than .29 seconds. As in previous meets, junior Marty Evans and sophomore Matt Bieszard shined in the middle sprints, winning both their heats in the 400-meter dash. Evans won his heat in 49.10 seconds and placed 12th overall. Bieszard edged out Monmouth’s Jason Kelsey by two-hundredths of a second to win his heat in the 400-meter dash, placing 15th overall. Evans and Bieszard also ran in the top pack in the 200-meter dash, placing 13th (22.17) and 15th (22.37), respectively. The two teamed up with seniors Remi Ray and Ted Galligan in the 4x400-meter relay team to finish 11th.
In the throws, freshman Mike Levine finished in the top 10 in the weight throw (16.14m) and junior David Smith took 14th place in the shot put (14.25m).
With the number of individuals qualifying for IC4As growing with each meet, the Bulldogs are certainly getting back into race mode. Their next meet is at home in the Giegengack Invitational from Feb. 5-6.
