Friday Night Races Feature Distance Runners

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – After a strong season opener at the Tribe Invitational two weeks ago, the Bulldogs will travel to Princeton for the two-day Sam Howell Invitational this weekend. Friday's portion of the meet will also host the Friday Night Races, featuring distance runners who have met the meet standards to compete. The track at Weaver Stadium will also be the site of IC4A Championships on May 13-15. While rain and snow showers are on the weather forecast for Friday, the Bulldogs are ready to take on the adverse weather.

Despite the potential bad weather, David Shoehalter, the Mark T. Young '68 Director of Cross Country and Track and Field, said the Bulldogs are prepared for anything.

"Our middle distance and distance group has been toughing it out on the outdoor track … We've had to move back into Coxe Cage for many of our speed workouts. When it comes down to it, it's outdoor track and field, and we'll need to move out eventually," Shoehalter said.

At the Friday Night Races, the distance runners have a special chance to compete with among the best this weekend. Seniors Matt Bogdan and junior Nathan Richards, both scorers at last year's Heptagonals and Bogdan an NCAA Regional qualifier, will run their first race in the 3,000-meter steeplechase this season. After moving up to the 3,000-meter run last weekend, junior Julian Sheinbaum, who ran the mile at indoor Heptagonals and IC4As, returns to the 1,500-meter run and will be the Bulldogs' lone competitor in that event on Friday. The Bulldogs bring in a host of runners in the 5,000-meter run, including senior Max Walden, junior Samuel Lynch, sophomores Demetri Goutos and Sam Kirtner and freshman Ryan Laemel. Sophomore Matthew Thwaites will also compete in the 10,000-meter run to wrap up Friday's competition.

In the middle distances, freshman James Shirvell will have his first outdoor collegiate race in the 800-meter run after an impressive indoor season in which he took second in the 1,000-meter run at Heptagonals. Sophomore Christopher Ramsey and Sheinbaum should also give strong performances in the 800-meter run.

Senior captain Marty Evans and junior Matthew Bieszard could bring huge performances in the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes. Evans won both events at the opening outdoor meet, while Bieszard ran a personal best in the 200-meter dash. In the 100-meter dash, senior Nathan Molina, who competed at outdoor Heptagonals last year, will have his first race, along with freshman Daniel Jones, the Bulldogs' fastest sprinter in the 60-meter dash during indoor season. Both the 4x400 and 4x100 relays also look solid after taking wins at the opening meet.

In the throws, sophomore Mike Levine looks strong after a win in the discus at the opening meet. Senior David Smith will also have a busy weekend, competing in all three throwing events. Senior Samba Binagi will aim for a strong start to his last outdoor season in the triple jump, along with sophomore Tommy Winger. Winger and freshman Dana Lindberg will also compete in the long jump, both competitors in the event at indoor Heptagonals.

Friday's competition will start with the hammer throw at 4 p.m. and. Saturday's competition begins at 11:00 a.m. with the women's hammer throw and ends with the men's 4x400-meter relay at 5:15 p.m. A complete schedule can be found here. Results will be posted at GoPrincetonTigers.com and Yalebulldogs.com after the meet.
