Select Athletes Compete Based on Qualifying Standards
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Although the Ivy League Heptagonals Championships may have been the biggest team meet of the year, many Bulldogs will have the opportunity to try for even better performances without the pressure of Heptagonals at the IC4A Championships on May 13-15. The meet, hosted by Princeton, will feature athletes from the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions who have met the IC4A qualifying standards. Seven individuals and all three relay teams will compete for the Bulldogs.
The duo of senior captain Marty Evans and junior Matthew Bieszard are scheduled to race the 200-meter dash this week. Evans had a solid weekend behind him at outdoor Heptagonals, placing third in both the 200-meter and 100-meter dashes. Bieszard also competed at Heptagonals in those events.
The distance squad brings in senior John Van Deventer in the 1,500-meter run and freshman James Shirvell in the 800-meter run. Van Deventer qualified with a personal best of 3:49.05, also placing third at Heptagonals last week. Shirvell is also coming off a season best of 1:52.41 from Heptagonals.
The Bulldogs have a strong chance of scoring in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with junior Nathan Richards and senior Matt Bogdan entering with the eighth-fastest and 12th fastest times, respectively, according to the performance list for IC4As at Tfrrs.org. Both scored at Heptagonals, Richards finishing in fourth and Bogdan in sixth.
Freshman Mike Levine could have another big performance this weekend after throwing a season best of 54.28m in the discus to place first at Heptagonals, which is currently No. 8 in the performance list for IC4As. Levine qualified in the hammer throw as well, in which he also threw a season best at Heptagonals.
The relays are also coming off a strong weekend at Heptagonals. The 4x100-meter relay, which could feature senior Nathan Molina, Evans, senior Chris Stanley, Bieszard and freshman Daniel Jones, ran a season best last week to place fifth. The 4x400-meter relay followed in similar fashion to place fourth, running the same group as the 4x100-meter relay. The 4x800-meter relay just ran their IC4A-qualifying time at Heptagonals, cutting almost 20 seconds from their previous best, including junior Conor Dooney, junior Charlie Jaeger, junior Julian Sheinbaum, sophomore Christopher Ramsey and Shirvell.
On Friday, the Bulldogs will compete in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 7:00 p.m. A complete schedule can be found here. Results will be posted on Yalebulldogs.com and Lancertiming.com after the meet.
