Van Deventer Advances to Finals in 1,500-Meter Run
Bulldogs Finish Day One of NCAA Regional
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Making sure that his collegiate run was not over yet, senior John Van Deventer clinched a spot in the finals of the 1,500-meter run on the first day of the NCAA East Regional. If all goes well in finals, Van Deventer could be one of 12 runners in the 1,500-meter run who advance to the national championship.
In Thursday's preliminaries, Van Deventer took third in his heat and finished with a time of 3:50.25 as the 19th fastest time overall out of 48 runners. Kris Gauson of Butler finished with the top time in 3:48.38. The top four in five heats and the next four fastest times qualified for finals, which will take place on Saturday at 6:45 p.m. In finals, the top five of two heats and the next two fastest times will qualify for the national meet. Like preliminaries, Saturday's lineup looks like it will be a tight race as all the finalists' times are within three seconds of each other.
On Friday, senior Matt Bogdan and junior Nathan Richards will compete in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, the last race of the night at 9:10 p.m. The top three in each heat and the next three fastest times advance to the national championship. Heat sheets and live results are available at IUHoosiers.com. A complete schedule of the meet as well as live results and video coverage can be found at the meet website. Results will be posted at Yalebulldogs.com after the meet.
