NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The men's track and field team will compete at Coxe Cage for the second weekend in a row on Friday and Saturday as the Bulldogs host the Giegengack Invitational. Many of the top finishers last weekend for the Bulldogs will hit the track again this weekend, and we will also see several distance runners whose action thus far in the season has been limited.
Freshman sprinter Vincent Vaughns will be the likely favorite in the 60-meter dash at the meet. Vaughns has had a remarkable start to his Bulldog career, going toe-to-toe with some of the top sprinters in the league in his first several meets. Vaughns placed third in the event last weekend against Harvard and Princeton. Also competing in the 60-meter dash for the Bulldogs this weekend will be freshman Kyle Macauley, who finished fifth in the event last weekend.
Several distance runners will compete for the Bulldogs at this meet. In the mile run, we will see seniors Andre Ivankovic and James Randon and freshmen James Lewis and Austin Stoner. Last season, Randon became the first Bulldog ever to run the mile in under four minutes. This is his first shot at the event this year, so he is the athlete to watch at this weekend's meet.
The men's 4x400 relay team has switched its lineup at nearly every meet so far this season, but regardless of who is competing, the team has been incredibly successful. This weekend's squad will be composed of sophomore Connor Hill, senior Torren Peebles, freshman Jonathan Ascher and senior Austin Loewen. Loewen and junior Paedyn Gomes will also be competing in the 60-meter hurdles. Gomes took third place in this event last weekend with a personal-best time of 8.03 seconds - look for him to perform well again this weekend in his signature event.
In the field events, sophomore Austin Laut will compete in the pole vault and sophomore Jimmy Shih is the Bulldog favorite in both the long jump and triple jump. Shih took second place in the triple jump and third place in the long jump last weekend for the Bulldogs, and will be joined in the long jump this weekend by junior Carl Mansson. The Elis will field the usual suspects in the throwing events: junior Jake Hoops and senior Luke Persichetti will compete in the shot put, and Persichetti will be joined by sophomore Marcus Downs in the weight throw.
This weekend's events will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Friday and 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Full results and a recap will be available on Saturday evening.
