NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Sophomore Austin Laut led the Yale men's track and field team with a first-place finish in the pole vault at the Mark Young Invitational at Dewitt Cuyler Field. The Bulldogs competed almost exclusively in field events at the meet, giving several athletes their first taste of competition in the outdoor season. Laut's first-place finish in the pole vault continues a dominance in that event stretching back to the beginning of the indoor season.
Senior Austin Puleo was the Elis' sole track athlete who competed at the meet. He finished fourth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 53.03 seconds.
Two Bulldog sophomores competed in the high jump. Keith McCord placed second with a jump of 1.94 meters, and Cody Clements took seventh. Clements placed fifth in last weekend's meet at PLNU, and both he and McCord will be looking to jump competitively at the Ivy League Outdoor Championships in just over a month's time.
Freshman Bruno Jednacak led the three Bulldogs who competed in the long jump today with a third-place finish and a jump of 6.86 meters. Sophomore Jimmy Shih competed in two events, placing fourth in the long jump just behind Jednacak and fifth in the triple jump. His mark of 6.72 meters in the long jump is the highest he has jumped this season. Junior Carl Mansson finished eighth with a jump of 6.34 meters.
Two of the Bulldogs' throwers also competed this weekend. Junior Jake Hoops placed third in the shot put with a throw of 15.56 meters, and sophomore Marcus Downs placed fifth in the discus throw with a toss of 45.74 meters.
Full results from today's meet are available here. The Elis' next meet will be next Friday, April 7 at the Sam Howell Invitational at Princeton.
