Team, Nussbaum Earn USTFCCCA Academic Honors
NEW HAVEN, Conn.—The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association released its 2012 Division I Cross Country All-Academic Award recipients on Monday, naming Yale men's cross country an All-Academic team and sophomore Matt Nussbaum an individual All-Academic honoree.
The Bulldogs were one of 145 cross country teams nationwide named as All-Academic. Their team's cumulative GPA was an impressive 3.56, third-highest in the nation behind the University of Memphis (3.65) and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (3.64). The Elis were one of six Ivy League teams to receive the award, posting the top team GPA in the league. Harvard was second in the league with a team GPA of 3.491.
Nussbaum, a Haddonfield, N.J., native, was one of three Ivy League student-athletes—and one of just 67 student-athletes nationwide—to be named a Cross Country All-Academic honoree. In addition to making his mark in the classroom, Nussbaum achieved great success during the 2012 cross country season, as he became one of the region's most skilled distance runners. He registered the fastest 8k time (24:05.00) by a Bulldog in more than four years, led the Elis in five of the six meets in which he competed and gained All-Ivy honors with his 10th-place finish at Heps. He set a personal record in the 8k at the Yale-Harvard meet and broke that personal record two weeks later at Heps with his 24:05.00 time, finishing just 2.2 seconds behind Cornell star Nick Wade. Two weeks after that, at the Northeast Regional Championships, Nussbaum ran the 10k in 31:02.9, leading all Bulldogs and finishing in 24th place overall. Nussbaum is in Silliman College and has not yet declared a major—a fact which has not kept him from excelling both inside and outside of the classroom.
To qualify as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Team, the team must have had a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or better and have started at least five runners at their respective NCAA regional championship.
Meanwhile, to qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have either earned USTFCCCA All-America status or finished in the NCAA region's top 15 (or top 10 percent) in 2012.
