NEW HAVEN, Conn. – After helping to guide the Yale women’s basketball team to its first Ivy League weekend sweep in three seasons, freshman Megan Vasquez has been recognized by the Ancient Eight as its Rookie of the Week for the third time this season. Vasquez, who shares the honor this week with Princeton’s Niveen Rasheed, averaged 13.5 points, 5.5 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals in the Bulldogs’ home wins over Cornell and Columbia.

Vasquez, Yale’s leading scorer in 2009-10, shot 40.9% (9-22) from the floor, 50% (4-8) from three-point range and 83.3% (5-6) from the free throw line in the pair of victories. She came off the bench on Friday night, scoring eight points with four assists and two rebounds in 21 minutes of work as the Bulldogs dispatched Cornell handily, 74-50. In the 81-74 victory over Columbia on Saturday, Vasquez got the start and responded in a big way- matching her career high of 19 points and setting a new personal standard with seven assists. Yale’s rookie standout, who played a career-best 33 minutes against the Lions, also grabbed four rebounds and helped ice the seven-point victory with a 4-for-4 performance from the free throw line in the final 28 seconds of the game.

On the season, Vasquez ranks second among Ivy League freshmen and 10th in the league overall with 11.4 points per game. She is also currently slotted at sixth in the Ancient Eight in free throw percentage (.778), ninth in steals (1.5 spg) and 10th in assists (2.5 apg).

Vasquez and the Bulldogs (9-11, 4-2 Ivy) are back in action this weekend for a pair of pivotal Ivy League contests at historic rival Harvard (12-7, 3-2) and defending champion Dartmouth (8-11, 3-2). Yale enters the weekend as a winner in four of its last five games.
