Class of 2014 Headed by Kansas Star Graf

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Four talented freshmen join the Yale women's basketball program this fall as the Bulldogs' class of 2014.  Janna Graf (F, Mission Woods, Kan.), Alexandra Osborn-Jones (G-F, Valhalla, N.Y.), Zenab Kieta (C, Raleigh, N.C.) and Amanda Tyson (G, Charlotte, N.C.) comprise one of the strongest classes recruited by Chris Gobrecht, who is in her sixth year as the Joel E. Smilow '54 Head Coach of Yale Women's Basketball.

 

“We are thrilled to have these four players joining our team this year.  They bring talents and attitudes that will make this Yale team even better, and will definitely help in our quest for an Ivy Championship.”

 

Here is a look at the Elis' newcomers.

 

Amanda Tyson

G          5-7

Charlotte, North Carolina

At Ardrey Kell High School: Four-year letter winner for the Knights… Totaled over 1,000 points over four years and was the leading scorer all four years… Conference offensive player of the year as a sophomore… Team MVP twice…Named captain her junior and senior seasons…. Four-year North Carolina High School Athletic Association Student Athlete.

 Personal: Amanda Marie Tyson is the daughter of Charles Tyson and Jacqueline Tyson…Interested in being a mathematics/engineering major.

Coach Gobrecht on Tyson: “Amanda should recover from her knee injury in time this year to give us a very solid performer in the backcourt, but the best part is that she is capable of being an outstanding player at Yale before her career is over.”

 

Alexandra Osborn-Jones

G/F     6-1

Valhalla, New York

At Rye Country Day School: Three-time captain…Over 1,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, and 500 career blocks…Four-year All-Fairchester Athletic Association…Four-time All-Westchester County …Three-time team MVP…Academic all-state… Led team to state championships as a junior and senior.  

 Personal: Alexandra Osborn-Jones is the daughter of Elizabeth Osborn, a former Princeton swimmer…Grandfather, Dickerson Osborn, coached freshman basketball at Yale.

Coach Gobrecht on Osborne-Jones:  “OJ is an excellent scorer in the post now and she has three-point range!  She will bring another dimension to our game.”

 
 

Zenab Kieta

C          6-2

Raleigh, North Carolina

At Pomfret School: Team MVP…Named to the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council (NEPSAC) All-Star Game… Team won the NEPSAC Class B Championship in 2009…Went undefeated (28-0) in 2009.

At Knightsdale High School: Team captain… Named to the all-conference team as a junior and senior….Averaged 16 rebounds and nine blocks as a senior….Nominated to the North Carolina East – West All-Star Game as a senior…Also played volleyball and ran track.

 Personal: Zenab Kieta is the daughter of Ismaël Kieta and Andreé Galbert…Born in Paris…Moved to the United States at age five…A communications major.  

Coach Gobrecht on Keita:  “Zenab will give us a dominating defensive presence in the post.  We are excited to add her high energy and aggressive play to our Bulldog style of basketball!”

 

Janna Graf

Mission Woods, Kansas

At Shawnee Mission East High School: Three-time captain…Two-time Sunflower League Player of the Year…. Three-time all-state… Three-time All-Sunflower League...Two-time Sun County Player of the Year… Second in school history in career points (1,200) and rebounds (620)... Two-year DiRenna Award finalist…Two-time first team Kansas All-Metro Team… Kansas Gatorade Player of the Year nominee… McDonald's All-American nominee… Averaged 21 points and 9.9 rebounds as a senior… Team was co-Sunflower League Champions in 2008 and 2010… Qualified for state championship tournament in 2009, the first time in 19 years… Helped her class to the most basketball wins in school history…. Also lettered in track.

Personal: Janna Graf is the daughter of William Graf and Sabina Teschner…Name is pronounced “Yanna”… Parents attended German universities and Janna is interested in the German language…An economics major.
