Ivy League Honors Yale Freshman for Third Straight Week and Fourth Time This Season

Ivy League's Press Release

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The Yale University women's basketball team is growing more and more confident in Sarah Halejian, and as the freshman guard's contributions on the court keep piling up, so does the accolades.

One of three Yale players to score in double figures in the Bulldogs' only game of the week, Halejian scored 13 points to go with three rebounds, two assists and two steals in a 60-55 loss to Brown on Friday. Her performance was a key reason why Yale was able to stay within striking distance in their first Ivy League loss of the season. On Monday, the Ivy League recognized Halejian's efforts by naming her the Ivy League Co-Rookie of the Week.

It is the third consecutive week that Halejian has been named the Rookie of the Week and the fourth time this season. This week's award moves Halejian into a tie with Penn's Kara Bonenberger for the most Rookie of the Week honors this season.

Against Brown on Friday, Halejian kept Yale in the game early. She dominated the first half, scoring 10 of her 13 points in the half to lead the Bulldogs through the first 20 minutes of play. Her 10 first-half points were the highest scoring output by any player in the first half.

Her 13-point performance was the fourth straight double-digit scoring effort for Halejian and sixth of the season. In the last four games, Halejian has averaged 14.5 points per game. In the last five games, Halejian has raised her season scoring average from 6.9 ppg. to 8.9 ppg., which moved her from fifth on the team in scoring to third, behind only three-time leading scorer Megan Vasquez, an All-Ivy First-Team selection last season, and Janna Graf, a unanimous All-Ivy Rookie Team selection last season.

Halejian shares this week's Rookie of the Week honor with Dartmouth's Milica Toskovic, who scored 14 points and grabbed five rebounds in Dartmouth's 86-76 loss to Longwood on Saturday. Brown's Lauren Clarke was named the Ivy League's Player of the Week after averaging 14.5 points over two games for the Bears last week, including 15 points and five rebounds against Yale on Friday.

Yale senior captain Michelle Cashen earned a spot on the Ivy League's Weekly Honor Roll for her performance in the loss to Brown. Cashen had just two points, three rebounds and one assist at halftime, but her second-half performance was everything that Yale could have asked for and more. Cashen scored 11 of her points, grabbed five of her game-high eight rebounds, including all three of her offensive rebounds, and dished out four of her assists in the second half to help the Bulldogs stay within striking distance in their loss to Brown on Friday. Her eight rebounds and five assists were the highest totals of any player in the game. An All-Ivy Honorable Mention selection last year and a Second-Team selection as a sophomore, Cashen shot 6-for-10 overall, including a stellar 5-for-7 in the second half.

Yale returns to the road this weekend when it is scheduled to visit Harvard at 7 p.m. on Friday and Dartmouth at 2 p.m. on Sunday in a pair of key Ivy League contests.
