NEW HAVEN, Conn.- After nearing her second double-double of the season with 18 points and nine rebounds in the Bulldogs' 77-73 overtime win against Quinnipiac on Sunday afternoon, junior forward Haywood Wright has been named the Ivy League Player of the Week, as announced by the league office this afternoon.
In addition to her career-high 18 points, which included two free throws to ice the game in overtime, and her game-high nine rebounds, Wright led all players with four blocks and four steals and also dished out two assists in 34 minutes of action. The junior from Irvine, Calif. shot 6-for-9 (66.7%) from the floor, knocked down her lone three-point attempt and shot a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line. She also contributed with two stolen inbounds passes, one at the end of regulation and one at the conclusion of overtime, to preserve Yale's comeback victory.
On the season, Wright has been a force on both ends of the court for the Bulldogs. She is averaging 10.7 points per game and rates second in the Ivy League with a team-best 8.7 rebounds per contest. Defensively, Wright leads the Ivy League in blocked shots with 1.7 per game.
Wright and the Bulldogs will close out 2008 on the west coast with non-conference games at California Irvine and California Riverside on Dec. 28 and 30. After the trip, Yale kicks off 2009 with a four-game homestand against St. Bonaventure (Jan. 4), New Jersey Institute of Technology (Jan. 9), Bryant (Jan. 13) and the Ivy League opener against Brown (Jan. 16).
