Yale Announces Class of 2014

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Yale women's crew announces an impressive group of student athletes who have committed to Yale as the Class of 2014. The group of nine includes eight rowers and a coxswain. Seven of the nine have ties to the USA Jr. National Team system and one comes from the UK Jr. National Team.

"This class has the size, athletic ability and rowing experience to have an immediate impact at Yale," said head coach Will Porter. "Not only are they solid athletes, they all have the type of personality and character that will fit in well with our system and our team. I look forward to working with them and to see what they bring to our mix."

Porter credits assistant coach Kate Maloney for her role in putting together the group.

"The time and energy that goes into recruiting a class like this is remarkable and Kate Maloney has once again proven that she is one of the best recruiters in the country."

Why I picked Yale:

"On my visit, I felt an immediate connection with the team. I felt like I fit in already, and I could easily see myself being a Yale athlete. I fell in love with the campus and the residential college system, as well as the liveliness of the city of New Haven.  The primary reason was, however, my desire to be on one of the fastest teams in the nation while, at the same time, receiving an excellent education."

Favorite inspirational quote:

"The athlete's anaerobic threshold, the point at which the body's muscles have exhausted their oxygen store and start burning other fuel. For regular folks, reaching that threshold is quitting time; anaerobic work is 19 times harder than aerobic work. But rowing is all about harder. Elite rowers fire off the start at sprint speed -- 53 strokes per minute. With 95 pounds of force on the blade end, each stroke is a weightlifter's power clean. Rowers cross their anaerobic threshold with that first stroke. Then there are 225 more to the finish line."

Why I picked Yale:

"After rowing on the Junior National Team this past summer, I developed an interest in Yale's rowing program.  The combination of a phenomenal rowing program and incredible academics is a huge draw, but what really made the choice clear for me was the people I met during my visit - both on the crew team and around campus in general."
