Ritzel Wins Gold; Hart Captures Bronze At 2010 World Rowing Under 23 Championships

USA Boat Holds Off New Zealand, Canada

BREST, Belarus – Both Taylor Ritzel '10 and Catherine Hart '10 earned medals on the final day of the 2010 World Rowing Under 23 Championships. Ritzel stroked the United States women's eight to a gold medal, while Hart captured a bronze medal sitting in the Canadian women's eight. The championships capped a busy three months for the two, who both graduated Yale in May and then helped the Bulldogs varsity eight to the NCAA title a week later.

Ritzel earned a medal for the second straight year. She won a silver at last year's championships in the Czech Republic.

The U.S. sat in second place at the 500-meter mark as four crews were within 0.37 seconds of each other. But, the American crew made its decisive move during the second quarter of the race, building a 1.50-second advantage at the midway point. The U.S. continued to walk away from the field over the final 1,000 meters, pulling away for a 4.51-second victory over New Zealand. The U.S. crossed the finish line in a 6:31.97. New Zealand finished second in a 6:36.48, followed by Canada in a 6:38.16.

At Yale, Ritzel sat in the varsity eight in each of her four years and helped the Bulldogs to three Ivy League titles and three NCAA varsity eight crowns. She earned CRCA All-America honors three times and served as Yale's captain as a senior.

Hart was a two-year member of the varsity eight at Yale and a three-time CRCA Scholar Athlete.
