Yale Ranked Ninth In Latest CRCA/US Rowing National Poll
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale women's crew has seen plenty of Ohio State and Michigan at the NCAA Championships over the years. All three schools are regular qualifiers. It's been rare, though, for the teams to meet in the regular season. Ohio State did make a trip to Gilder Boathouse last year so the Bulldogs are returning the favor, heading to Columbus, Ohio, to face the Buckeyes and Wolverines on Saturday. The first race is set for 7:40 a.m. and the format is a double dual race so each Yale crew will row twice.
"It is part of our schedule expanding because we are committed to giving our athletes the best possible collegiate rowing experience," Yale head coach Will Porter said of the out-of-region trip.
All three schools were ranked in the top-10 in this week's CRCA/US Rowing national poll. Michigan is No. 3, Yale is No. 9 and Ohio State is ranked 10th.
"Ohio State raced us very hard last year and just beat Notre Dame by a good margin. They are at home, so I am sure they will be fast," Porter said. "Michigan just beat Princeton and Brown pretty easily. I expect them to be flying. We will just do our best to race well and see where that puts us."
Michigan's performance in its spring opener was particularly impressive. The Wolverines' first and second varsity eights both finished ahead of Princeton and Brown. Princeton is the defending varsity eight NCAA champion and Brown won the NCAA team title last spring. The victories moved U of M from ninth to third in the national rankings.
Ohio State's three NCAA boats all beat Notre Dame by at least six seconds last Saturday.
Yale also had a successful weekend, defeating both Columbia and Penn in all five races to capture the Connell Cup in New York City.
