Photo Finish Gives Dartmouth Class of 1985 Cup; Cornell Captures Cayuga Cup

DERBY, Conn. – The first home race of the spring season provided plenty of excitement for the Yale fans that gathered at the Gilder Boathouse. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, it was a day of mixed results as No. 13 Yale faced No. 19 Dartmouth and Boston University in the morning and No. 16 Cornell in the late afternoon.

Yale's second varsity, second varsity four and third varsity eight crews each won both races. The varsity four cruised to victory over Boston University and Dartmouth but fell to Cornell, while the varsity eight lost a photo finish to Dartmouth in the morning and then fell to the Big Red in the afternoon.

The most exciting race of the day was the morning's varsity eight showdown. Both Yale and Dartmouth were clocked at 6:22.8, but the Big Green was declared the winner after a video review. As a result, Dartmouth captured the Class of 1985 Cup.  Boston University finished third in 6:28.0.

Yale's second varsity won by a nearly six seconds over Dartmouth. BU was third. The varsity four had an impressive 10-second win, while the second varsity four and third varsity eight each cruised to easy victories.

Cornell retained the Cayuga Cup in the afternoon with a three-second victory in the varsity eight. Yale's second varsity had a much tougher race than in the morning but escaped with a narrow, three-tenths of a second win. In the varsity four, the Big Red finished in 7:17.2, nearly six seconds faster than Yale.

The Bulldogs' second varsity four cruised to an easy win, while the third varsity eight won by less than a second.

Yale races Princeton and Southern California next Saturday on Lake Carnegie in New Jersey.
