Lips, McDermott Earn Spots In 2012 Under-23 World Championships
Championships in Trakai, Lithuania, Next Month
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Two Yale women's rowers – rising junior Maddie Lips and Catherine McDermott '12 – have earned spots on the team that will represent the United State at the 2012 Under-23 World Championships next month in Trakai, Lithuania.
At Wednesday's trials on Mercer Lake in New Jersey, Lips won the women's single scull with a time of 7:44.681. Lips, who sat in Yale's varsity eight that finished 12th in the nation at the NCAA Championships in May on the same course, has international rowing experience. She won a silver medal with the United States' women's eight at the 2010 World Rowing Junior Championships.
McDermott was part of the four that cruised to a nearly 14-second victory at the trials. She will be making her second appearance at the Under-23 World Championships. Last summer, she helped the U.S. four to a fifth-place finish. At Yale, McDermott was a two-year member of the varsity eight and earned first team CRCA All-America recognition this spring as a senior.
