Lips, McDermott Represent U.S. At World Rowing Under-23 Championships
Lips Races In U.S. Four, Lips As A Single Sculler
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Two Yale rowers – Catherine McDermott '12 and Maddie Lips – represented the United States at the 2012 World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Trakai, Lithuania. McDermott helped the U.S. four to a sixth-place finish in the finals, while Lips, a rising junior, placed 15th in the single scull.
McDermott, who earned CRCA first team All-America recognition as a senior at Yale this spring, was sitting in the U.S. four for the second straight year at the Under 23 Championships.
Lips, who sat in the Yale varsity eight in the spring, placed third in the C final at the Championships. Two days earlier, she narrowly missed a spot in the semifinals, racing in the repechage. A tough start left her nearly five seconds off the pace in the first 500 meters, but she rallied to row a strong remainder of the race but was unable to make up the margin. She rebounded to win the C/D semifinals.
