Bulldogs Open Strong At Head Of Housatonic

Yale Eight Finishes First

DERBY, Conn. – The Yale women's crew kicked off the 2012-13 season in impressive fashion. The Bulldogs turned in several fine performances at the Head of the Housatonic, including a victory in the women's collegiate eight.

"It was a beautiful day on the Housatonic," said Yale head coach Will Porter. "It was great that Radcliffe and Brown joined us for the season opener. Maybe next year Princeton, Dartmouth, Cornell, Penn and Columbia will come as well."

The Bulldogs cruised to a nearly 10-second victory in the collegiate eight, finishing with a time of 15:14.9. Radcliffe was second in 15:24.31. Yale also had the third (15:30.91) and ninth (16:23.16) place finishing boats.

"I am encouraged that we were able to finish ahead of Radcliffe," Porter said. "They are very good."

The Bulldogs also had four boats race in the collegiate four. Yale's top finisher came in second with a time of 17:15.67. Radcliffe was first in 16:28.24. Yale crews were also third (17:26.50), fourth (17:26.50) and eighth (18:27.00).

"Our seniors did a great job leading the team and setting the tone," Porter said.

In the novice eight, the Bulldogs placed fourth with a time of 17:47.08.

Following the racing, Yale dedicated a boat to the four former Bulldog rowers who competed in the 2012 London Olympics. Ashley Brzozowicz '04, Tess Gerrand '10, Jamie Redman '08 and Taylor Ritzel '10 were all on hand for the celebration.

"It was special for our team to spend some real time with our four Olympians," Porter said. "What a great weekend. Old teammates, great racing and a beautiful day on the Housatonic."
