Varsity Eight Competing For Class of 1985 Cup

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The ninth-ranked Yale women's crew heads to the Charles River on Saturday to face Dartmouth and Boston University. Racing starts at 7:10 a.m. with the third varsity eight. The winner in the varsity eight receives the Class of 1985 Cup.

The forecast is calling for a sunny day in Boston, which is good news for a Yale squad that has had to deal with venue switches, difficult condition and postponements this spring.

"I am looking forward to getting a clean race in," said Will Porter, The Friends of YWC Head Coach of the Bulldogs. "Last week our 1V caught debris in their rudder at the 1000-meter mark which disrupted the second half of their race. We have not raced on calm water yet, maybe this will be the week. We have not put together a complete race yet."

Nevertheless, it has been a very productive spring so far for the Bulldogs. The varsity eight has a 10-1 record, the second varsity eight is 12-1 and the varsity four is 11-0.

Yale will be looking to retain the Class of 1985 Cup. Last year on the Housatonic River, the Bulldogs won the varsity eight by nearly four seconds over Dartmouth.

"The cup between Dartmouth, Boston University and Yale is a tradition that dates back to the early '70s," Porter said. "This Yale team is eager to have their shot at it."

The brutal winter has also taken its toll on Dartmouth. The Big Green's varsity will be racing for the first time this spring. Dartmouth was supposed to open the spring season last week but its race with MIT, Boston College and UMass had to be cancelled.

BU opened its season last weekend by defeating Buffalo and Rhode Island.
