Blue Trumps Red and Orange

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Yale's women's crew team put in a strong performance Saturday morning to retain the Cayuga Cup against Syracuse and Cornell. The Bulldogs won three of the four races they entered and were only denied a perfect showing in the novice eight, where the Big Red beat them to first by 1.4 seconds.

Although the Novice 8 race was closely contested, the others were anything but. The novice eight was the first race of the day, and after that narrow loss, Yale's varsity eight overcame strong headwinds to win easily. The Yale boat won by a time of 19 seconds; Cornell was a distant second, and Syracuse came third.

Once the headwinds subsided after the varsity eight race, the Yale second varsity eight boat had another dominant race, finishing in a time of 7:08 - three seconds faster than the varsity eight. The time was also good enough for a whopping 25-second win over hosts Syracuse, who finished second.

The Bulldogs entered two boats into the varsity four race, and the Yale A and B boats continued the high standard set by the varsity and second varsity eights, finishing first and second respectively over Cornell.

The victory will help to pace the Bulldogs, who will face stiffer competition as their season continues. Yale, who was ranked fourth in the country this week in the US Rowing Collegiate Poll, will be racing in familiar waters next weekend, as it hosts Dartmouth and Boston University.
