Change Of Schedule Doesn't Slow Down No. 1 Yale

April 3, 2009

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - When the Yale women's crew team arrived at the Gilder Boathouse on Thursday at 4 p.m. ready to practice, head coach Will Porter had a surprise waiting. He told them the bus for Syracuse was leaving in three hours. Due to the poor weather forecast for Saturday, the race with Syracuse and Cornell had been moved to Friday afternoon. The change in plans had little effect on the Bulldogs, who won all five races, including the varsity eight to capture the Cayuga Cup for the eighth straight year.

"The team did a great job adjusting on the fly," Porter said. "We raced very strong. All of our boats are on track."

The varsity eight, ranked first in the nation, finished the 2,000-meter course in 6:34.5, more than 10 seconds faster than second-place Syracuse, who crossed the finish line in 6:44.8. Cornell was third with a time of 6:50.27.

"The varsity eight is headed in the right direction," Porter said. "We're getting closer to rowing a complete race, but we still have some things we need to work on."

The second varsity was an easy winner as well, finishing nearly 16 seconds ahead of second-place Cornell. The Bulldogs finished in 6:38.17, while the Big Red came in at 6:54.32. Syracuse was third in 6:57.76.

Yale's varsity four also was very impressive, winning by almost 20 seconds. The Bulldogs finished with a time of 7:23.24. Syracuse (7:42.07) was second followed by Cornell (7:46.53).

The novice eight race was the closest of the afternoon. Yale finished in 6:49.72, nearly three seconds ahead of second-place Cornell (6:52.91). Syracuse (7:04.37) was third.

The Bulldogs had the top two boats in second varsity four. Yale B finished in 7:29.21 and Yale C came in at 7:36.0.

Yale races Boston University and Dartmouth for the Class of 1985 Cup next Saturday.
