Bulldogs Win Class of 1985 Cup

April 7, 2007

BOSTON, Mass. - It was a day of mixed fortunes for the Yale women's crew team at Saturday's Class of 1985 Cup, hosted by Boston University. But the Bulldogs won the race that mattered most - the varsity eight - to retain the cup and defeat Minnesota, Dartmouth and BU.

Yale's varsity eight secured the Class of 1985 Cup by defeating second place Minnesota by five seconds. The varsity eight is undefeated this spring. The boat included Rachel Jeffers (stroke) Tess Gerrand (seven), Christine Geiser (six), Jamie Redman (five), Taylor Ritzel (four), Amanda Rich (three), Alice Henly (two), Christine Glandorf (bow) and Emily Cleveland (coxswain).

The freshman eight gave Yale its second win of the regatta and in doing so finished the third weekend of racing as the second boat aside from the varsity eight to go undefeated in 2007. The boat included Katherine Adams (stroke) Kate Mullan (seven), Allix Wilde (six), Hayley Johnson (five), Zoe Ballance (four), Catherine Hart (three), Mary Pat Wixted (two), Laura Gottesdiener (bow) and Mia Kanak (coxswain).

Yale's three other boats at the regatta all had to settle for second place. The second varsity eight and the varsity four both lost to Minnesota, while the varsity four 'B' was defeated by Boston University.

Next weekend, the Bulldogs will host Princeton in the Eisenberg Cup. Yale, which moved up from fifth to fourth in the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association/USRowing poll this week, will try to win back the cup from the Tigers, ranked sixth.
