No. 2 Bulldogs Top Tennessee, Princeton
April 19, 2008
PRINCETON, N.J. - Racing away from home for the first time this spring didn't prove to be a problem for the Yale women's crew. The Bulldogs' varsity eight, which is ranked second in the nation, edged No. 4 Princeton and No. 12 Tennessee on Lake Carnegie. Yale finished in 6:38.1, nearly two seconds ahead of second-place Tennessee, which came in at 6:40.4. Princeton was a close third in 6:40.5.
With the win over Princeton, the Bulldogs captured the Carola B. Eisenburg Cup for the second straight year. The last time Yale held possession of the cup two years in a row was 1987 and 1988.
The Bulldogs' second varsity and varsity four also finished first. The second varsity completed the 2000-meter course in 6:52.5, five seconds ahead of second-place Tennessee. Princeton was third in 7:07.4. In the varsity four race, Yale cruised to a nearly 15-second win, finishing in 7:41.4. Tennessee (7:56.4) was second followed by Princeton (8:02.6).
Yale's varsity eight, second varsity and varsity four boats are all undefeated on the season.
"We're continuing to get faster each week," said Yale head coach Will Porter. "That's been our focus all season."
In the varsity eight race, Princeton had a slim lead after 200 meters, but the Bulldogs edged ahead at 400 meters and led for the rest of the way.
"Our varsity did a good job," Porter said. "We're getting better with our speed off the start. We got into a nice rhythm."
Yale won the third varsity four B race in 7:56.5. Princeton was first in the novice eight race with a time of 7:07.4, and won the second novice four race in 8:28.5.
The Bulldogs are back on the Housatonic River next Saturday, hosting third-ranked Virginia and 13th-ranked Harvard.
