DERBY, Conn. - The Yale women's crew team returned to winning ways Saturday. The Bulldogs won four out of five races, beating Radcliffe to secure their third consecutive Nathaniel Case Cup at Gilder Boathouse.
The Bulldogs were in dominant form against Radcliffe; three of their four wins were by margins of 10 seconds or more. The victory followed a difficult showing against Princeton and Virginia in last weekend's Eisenberg Cup.
In the varsity eight, the Yale boat stroked by Cara Dermody rowed to a 10 second victory over the Black and White of Radcliffe. The Bulldogs lined up with Dermody, Jane Moore (seven), Maria Stevens (six), Rachel Jeffers (five), Jamie Redman (four), Jennifer Hansen (three), Joanna Hess (two), Suzanne Salgado (bow), and Emily Cleveland (cox). Yale's comfortable victory follows last year's photo finish in which Yale was declared the winner by a bow ball.
The second varsity race was a faster paced one, with Yale edging out Radcliffe by just two seconds. Yale's second varsity boat, featuring a trio of freshmen in Emily Matykiewicz (seven), Caroline Berson (two) and Christine Glandorf (bow), was ranked the number one 2V boat in the first EAWRC Coaches Poll of the 2006 season.
While the varsity four and third varsity boats both rowed solid races, comfortably beating the Black and White, it was a different story for the novice eight. Yale were neck and neck with the Radcliffe "A" boat with 500 meters to go when the Bulldogs caught an over the head crab which brought the boat to a halt.
Next weekend, the Bulldogs will head to Providence, R.I. to face Brown and Dartmouth in the Anne Case Cup. Yale will be looking to double up with the two Case cups - the Nathaniel Case Cup and the Anne Case Cup - for the second year in a row. In its way will be a deep Brown squad that has not lost a race in its last three regattas.
