Women's Rowing Finishes 10th at NCAA Championship

May 30, 2006

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. - Yale women's crew finished 10th at the NCAA Championships with a team score of 21 last weekend on Mercer Lake, West Windsor, N.J. It was the Bulldogs' fifth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Team Championships. California won its second consecutive national team title with Princeton claiming the varsity eight championship.

"We had a very young team that actually performed as projected," said Yale Head Coach Will Porter. "We did the best we could at the NCAAs. For an `off year' we did pretty well."

The Bulldogs had to overcome some obstacles on the way to taking 10th at the nationals. First, Porter, who had back surgery this spring, missed three weeks with the team during a crucial point in the season. The Bulldogs still performed well at Sprints and came into the NCAAs extremely optimistic. Then Yale had a tough draw in its varsity eight opening heat last weekend; all six from that race made the semifinals. Finally, prior to the semis, one of Yale's best rowers was ill and could not sleep the night before the race.

Yale's varsity eight placed fourth in the petite final with a time of 6:49.669. Notre Dame clocked in at 6:47.546 to win the race. The junior varsity eight also finished fourth, crossing the finish line at 7:03.459. Michigan State claimed the race with a time of 6:57.220.

In the varsity four petite final Yale posted a time of 7:57.685 to finish fourth with Ivy League rival Princeton winning the race in 7:49.343.
