April 23, 2009
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Five Yale boats will look to remain undefeated when the Bulldogs race Radcliffe on Saturday on the Charles River in Boston. The varsity eight takes on the Crimson at 7:48 a.m. and the winner will get the Case Cup. Yale has had possession of the cup for five straight years.
Despite rowing to a nearly three-second victory over Princeton last Saturday, Yale's varsity eight fell to second in this week's CRCA-US Rowing national poll. California, which won the Lake Natoma Invitational, moved into the top spot. The Bears received 14 first-place votes compared to 11 for the Bulldogs.
Yale's second varsity and varsity four boats have been dominant so far this spring. The second varsity has been winning by an average of nearly 13 seconds in its first four races, while the varsity four has been finishing an average of 17 seconds ahead of the competition.
Radcliffe's varsity eight is ranked 16th this week. The Crimson defeated Dartmouth and Syracuse to win the Elizabeth O'Leary Cup last Saturday. Radcliffe's second varsity also won, while the varsity four placed second.
