Bulldogs Earn Multiple Awards from CRCA
May 21, 2004
The Yale women's crew team, set to compete in the NCAA tournament Memorial Day weekend in Sacramento, has been honored with several awards from the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA). Head Coach Will Porter was selected as the Regional Coach of the Year for New England while five Bulldogs were named to the All-Region team and three won National Scholar-Athlete Awards.
Porter was one of six coaches honored as a Regional Coach of the Year. The award is intended to recognize a coach who has experienced outstanding success during the season, demonstrated great team improvement from the prior season, fulfilled their team's potential and/or demonstrated a high level of professionalism and integrity as a coach. The Division I National Coach of the Year will be announced at a later date.
Ashley Brzozowicz and Maria Stevens both earned first team All-Region honors for the New England region, while coxswain Jehan Budak, Rachel Jeffers and Alicja Witkowski were named to the second team. The All-Region awards are designed to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of female rowers and coxswains during the current season. Teams with Varsity 8 boats that were ranked in the top 6 regionally as of the final NCAA Regional Ranking had athletes automatically distributed to the All-Region teams. At-large selections (for rowers from teams that have Varsity 8 boats which finished outside the top 6 regionally) were chosen by the Division I Awards committee based on boat performance, 2K erg score and coaches' comments. Coxswains were also selected by the Division I awards committee based on boat performance and coaches' comments.
Yale had three team members win National Scholar-Athlete awards. Joanna Hess and Claire Norsetter are both Political Science majors, while Jane Moore is undeclared. The National Scholar-Athlete award is designed to recognize the outstanding academic accomplishments of female rowers and coxswains during the current season. To be eligible, student-athletes must have a 3.5 or higher cumulative GPA through the fall semester of the current season.
