Fencers Head to Brandeis
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Yale fencers head to Waltham, Mass. this Saturday for the annual Brandeis Invitational. The team is coming off a strong showing at the Penn State Open and hopes to make its mark on this first team competition.
The competition schedule is as follows and starts at 9 a.m.:
Round 1: Yale vs. Boston College
Round 2: Yale vs. Brandeis
Round 3: Yale vs. MIT
Round 4: Off
Round 5: Yale vs. UNC
Round 6: Yale vs. St. Johns
At total of eight schools will be present at the event. Yale will not fence Brown or Cornell as they are both in the Ivy League.
At last year’s Invitational Yale posted good results, beating Boston College, Brandeis and MIT, but missing the sweep by losing to St. John’s. Added to this year’s competition will be UNC, which placed 20th at last year’s NCAA team championship. At the same competition Yale placed 10th while St. John’s took 6th, Brandeis finished 18th, Boston College nabbed 23rd and M.I.T. seized 24th.
Senior and team manager Jennifer Ivers noted, “It's going to be a long day, but we have the potential to do really well. At Penn State Maddie Oliver and Kate Pitt showed us what they're made of, so I'm hoping they'll continue to perform at the same level. I'm also excited that Maddy Buxton is going to be fencing with us this weekend. She'll definitely contribute to our epee squad's performance.”
She concluded, “With this kind of talent across all three weapons, I'm hoping we can dominate this meet. It's the freshmen's first collegiate-style team tournament, so I think they'll get a boost from having the entire team to cheer for them and offer advice while they're fencing.”
