Fencers to Host Sacred Heart and Drew

Yale fencers are getting ready to host two teams, Sacred Heart and Drew, in Payne Whitney Gym’s 7th floor fencing salon this weekend. The two teams have made the trip to Yale in the past, most recently last year, when the Bulldogs sent them home defeated. These two opponents will be Yale’s last team competitions before they head to the first half of Ivy competition at Cornell on Feb. 21. The meet begins at 1:00 p.m. and will be the Bulldogs’ last home competition of the season.

Recalling last weekend’s NYU Invitational, captain Rebecca Moss remarked:

“We all got in some great fencing at NYU and I'm hoping we will incorporate what we learned into this meet. These two schools do not have the same level of experience as most of the schools we competed against at NYU, but that offers its own challenge. We have to keep things simple and remember the basics.”

Last year the Bulldogs imposed themselves to seize non-league wins against these two teams. Yale downed Sacred Heart by 19-8, an improvement from the year before’s 17-10 decision. Against Drew, a new opponent, the Bulldogs won 22-5.

Even though the Bulldogs are going into this weekend with confidence, Moss also underlined the importance of this last meet.

We need to perform well here because it’s our last meet before the Ivy competitions,” she said. “We see Ivies as our most important tournament of the year. We need this tournament to give us a boost and also some key competition fencing time.”

The starting line-ups for Saturday’s competition will be the following:

Foil

Zoe Egelman

Jillian Liu

Katharine Pitt

Epee

Rebecca Moss

Madeline Buxton

Tasha Garcia

Sabre

Jennifer Ivers

Katherine Arden

Madeline Oliver

Katharine Pitt, the foil squad’s captain, spoke with excitement on the upcoming weekend’s competition:

“The foil squad had a strong showing on Saturday at NYU. They fought with great spirit and heart, and I'm proud to be on the team with them. All the fencers have put an enormous amount of work into improving their competition skills this season and it shows. I'm looking forward to another powerful performance this weekend.”

The meet will be the last home event for the team’s six seniors: Katherine Arden, Andrea Feuer, Jennifer Ivers, Farrah Kimovec, Kristin Saetveit and Moss.

“I know all the seniors are really excited, and I'm sure we will have a great crowd to cheer us on as always,” said Moss.
