NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Yale fencers head to Philadelphia, Pa. this Sunday for the second half of Ivy competition. The Bulldogs will fence Brown and Cornell, the two teams they did not confront at last weekend’s Ivy competition at Cornell. Competition begins at 11 a.m. when the Bulldogs face Cornell. Yale will then finish its day against Brown at 3 p.m.

Yale heads into this competition looking to repeat last year’s wins against Cornell and Brown. Against Cornell at the 2009 Championships Yale managed to take a narrow 14-13 victory.

Senior saberist Jennifer Ivers was the only Yale fencer to walk away with a 3-0 sweep against Cornell. Yale took sabre, 7-2, but lost foil and epee, 6-3 and 5-4. The margin afforded to them by the sabre squad let the team come out on top. Last weekend, the Big Red dropped three matches, falling 17-10 to Penn, 21-6 to Columbia, 18-9 to Harvard and winning 1 5-12 against Brown. The Bulldogs, on the other hand, fell to Penn, Columbia and Harvard by scores of 16-11, 21-6 and 17-10, respectively. The Yale-Cornell match therefore looks like it will be just as competitive this year as it was in ’09.

In part one of last year’s Ivy Championships, advancements made throughout the season paid off as Yale posted an 18-9 victory over Brown. Foilist Katharine Pitt and epeeist Rebecca Moss both went 3-0 against the Bears. Yale’s foilists and epeeists defeated Brown (8-1 and 7-2) while the sabre squad fell 6-3. The Bulldogs look to reverse this last score for a clean sweep this year. Last weekend, the Bears dropped all three matches, falling 15-12 to Cornell, 21-6 to Princeton and 23-4 to Columbia. The Bulldogs, on the other hand, fell to Columbia and Princeton by scores of 21-6 and 17-10, respectively.
