NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale women's fencing team will head to New York City on Saturday, to take part in the annual New York University Invitational tournament. Yale will have a long day of fencing, competing in dual-meets against Notre Dame, Northwestern, NYU, Ohio State, and Wayne State.
"Historically, this competition has been a very long and also a very difficult one, but we are looking forward to the challenge," said captain Madeline Oliver.
At last year's tournament, Yale finished with a final record of 2-3. The Bulldogs defeated the hosts by a score of 16-11 and Wayne State by a score of 21-6. Notably, against NYU the epee squad swept all nine bouts and against Wayne State the saber squad did the same. Yale lost to Notre Dame (21-6), Northwestern (22-5), and Ohio State (19-8).
Saturday's tournament will be the Bulldogs' first real competition of the spring semester and will get their season underway in earnest.
"We'll be fencing some tough teams, but are looking forward to getting in the swing of the season," said Oliver.
Competition beings at 8 a.m. on Saturday.
