NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale women's fencing team hosted Sacred Heart for a dual-meet on Saturday, Jan. 29. Before a big home crowd in the seventh floor fencing salon in the Payne Whitney Gymnasium, the Bulldogs defeated Sacred Heart by a final score of 19-8. Drew University was originally scheduled to participate in the Triangular meet, but eventually withdrew because of inclement weather.
The Yale foil and saber squads both posted 6-3 records, while the epee squad won seven of nine bouts. Captain Madeline Oliver, sophomore epeeist Robyn Shaffer, senior foilist Lidia Gocheva, and junior foilist Katharine Pitt all registered perfect 3-0 records. Additionally, the entire epee squad enjoyed winning records on the day.
"I'm really proud of the way the women's team stepped up today," said Oliver. "We took control and pulled out a good victory. Our freshmen fenced particularly really well today. Lucy Partman went 2-1, Laura Benoit won 1 and Alison Barton went 2-1."
The Yale women will now enjoy one day off before returning to the strips at Payne Whitney to host Vassar at 7 p.m. on Monday.
