PRINCETON, N.J. - The Yale women's fencing team concluded competition at the Ivy League Championships Sunday, falling to Penn, Cornell, Princeton and Harvard. The Bulldogs had lost to Columbia and Brown on Saturday. Princeton won the championship.

The weekend proved to be a difficult challenge for Yale's young team, much of which is composed of underclassmen walk-ons who are new to fencing. Regardless, the Bulldogs did enjoy some great performances from their more experienced fencers. Katharine Pitt finished with a 10-8 record and swept all three of her bouts against Harvard. Lidia Gocheva swept her bouts against Brown. Tasha Garcia finished with a 9-9 record and Robyn Shaffer finished with an 8-10 record.

The best Bulldog performance of the weekend came from sophomore captain Madeline Oliver. The saber phenom finished with a 12-6 record and a 0.667 winning percentage. Oliver swept all of her bouts against Brown, Cornell and Harvard.

Meanwhile, the Elis also enjoyed some success from their newest fencers. Freshman saberist Lucy Partman won five bouts during the tournament.

"We had some good bouts and a couple of good individual records, but we just couldn't put it all together for a win against this tough competition," reflected Oliver. "Our freshmen walk-ons gained a lot of experience and contributed a lot to the team. With the addition of a strong recruiting class next year, we should be much improved."
