Fencing Season Opens at Penn State
Looks to Match Last Year's Performance
NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The Yale women's fencing team will look to match last year's performance at its season opening Penn State Garret Open, which takes place Nov. 3-4 at State College, Pa.
The Garret Open will mark the start of the 2012-13 season for the Bulldogs, who will look to strengthen and consolidate their performances as the season progresses. As such, Yale will look to repeat last year's performance at Penn State this weekend.
Leading the Bulldogs is senior captain Robyn Shaffer, who also successfully led the team last year. She provided the highlight of last year's Garret Open when she finished 16th in epee competition, advancing through three rounds of competition to the first direct-elimination bout.
Another fencer who made it through the first round of pools was junior Lucy Partman, who will look to guide the Bulldogs' sabre squad.
While the experienced fencers will look to hone their skills for the season ahead, the Garret Open will also provide a competition venue for the team's four freshmen to open their Ivy League careers. Yale has two new fencers in epee, and one in foil and sabre.
The Garret Open is one of two competitions the Bulldogs will compete in this fall. The other is the Dec. 2 Brandeis Invitational in Waltham, Mass.
