Miller Finishes in 10th in Foil Competition

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Three members of the Yale women's fencing team put up a top-16 finish as it competed in the season-opening Garret Open, hosted by Penn State in University Park, Pa., on Nov. 3.

"I'm really proud of how we fenced today," said senior captain Robyn Shaffer. "Penn State is a tough individual tournament, and getting three fencers into the Direct Elimination rounds is a big improvement over last year."

It was a strong opening weekend of competition for the Bulldogs. In epee competition, Shaffer led the way in finishing in 14th place—a performance that put her two spots ahead of her performance last year, when she finished 16th in the field. Not far behind Shaffer was freshman Katherine Miller, who closed her first tournament for the Bulldogs with a 16th-place finish.

Meanwhile, in foil competition sophomore Lauren Miller eked out the team's best performance of the competition, with a 10th-place finish.

The Garret Open marked the start of the 2012-13 season for the Bulldogs, who will look to strengthen and consolidate their performances as the season progresses.

"Since it's our first competition, tough bouts and losses here show us where we need to improve before our team NCAA meets start in December," Shaffer said.

Next up is the Dec. 2 Brandeis Invitational in Waltham, Mass.
