Two-time NCAA Competitor
NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Sophomore Lauren Miller will lead the Yale women's fencing team as its new captain in the 2013-14 season.
"I am so honored to have been elected captain and am really looking forward to leading the team next season," Miller said.
Miller's election was announced Saturday evening at the team's annual end of year banquet, which also featured several awards to recognize outstanding achievements throughout the past season.
"I am incredibly impressed by the work Lauren has done in the past two years, and I'm delighted she'll be leading the women's team next year," said outgoing senior captain Robyn Shaffer. "She's a wonderful friend and teammate, and I'm sure she'll do an amazing job as captain."
In her two years competing for the Bulldogs, Miller has performed exceptionally on several occasions. In her freshman year, she finished in seventh place in foil competition at the NCAA National Championship and won the team's Most Valuable Fencer award.
This season, she finished in 13th place in foil at the NCAA National Championship, notching up 11 victories.
"I'm hoping to increase our team cohesion so that every member knows how important she is to the team as a whole," Miller said of her plans for next season. "This will be key in order to facilitate better communication about techniques and competition mindsets across the three weapons."
"I'm excited to start the season off on the right foot during Captain's Practices in the fall," Miller said.
