Bulldogs 0-4 on First Day of Ivy League Championships
Feb. 3, 2008
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Yale lost each of its four matches Sunday at the Ivy North Competition, hosted at Payne Whitney Gymnasium in New Haven, Conn. The Bulldogs fell to Penn (18-9), Harvard (18-9), Brown (15-12) and Cornell (16-11). Yale's epeeists had a very strong day, however, as they managed wins against both Harvard and Brown.
Penn swept the weapons en route to their 18-9 win. The Bulldog sabre and epee squads both fenced to close 5-4 decisions. Saberists Erin Frey and Katherine Arden and epeeists Abigail Fraeman and Rebecca Moss all won two bouts. The Yale foil squad lost, 8-1.
Moss, the sophomore standout epeeist, led her squad to a 5-4 win over Harvard's epeeists: she recorded a 3-0 mark. The saberists lost, 6-3, while the foilists lost, 7-2. Sophomore Lidia Gocheva tallied both of the foil squad's two wins.
Yale's closest test of the day came against Brown, when the Bulldogs lost, 15-12. The epee squad nailed down another victory, 7-2. Again it was Moss who snagged three wins to lead the way. Gocheva, Frey and Fraeman all won two bouts of their own.
Yale lost to Cornell, 16-11.
The Bulldogs will take on Columbia and Princeton on Sunday, Feb. 10, for the conclusion of the two-part Ivy League Championship.
