Yale Winless in Philadelphia

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Yale went winless in three meets Sunday at Part I of the Ivy League 2007 Fencing Championships in Philadelphia, Pa. The team fell to Penn, 18-9, Brown, 16-11, and Columbia, 19-8. The Bulldogs will fence against Princeton, Harvard and Cornell on Sunday, February 25th, when the Championships conclude in Cambridge, Mass.

Against Penn, the Yale foil and epee squads both battled to 5-4 defeats. Junior foilist, Diana Schawlowski, and freshmen epeeists, Rebecca Moss and Kristin Saetveit, all posted 2-1 records.

The Bulldog foilists found success versus Brown. In the squad's 8-1 win, freshman Lidia Gocheva and senior Alisa Mendelsohn both won three bouts. Moss won two more bouts with the epee, as the epee squad lost, 6-3.

Columbia swept the weapons against Yale. Mendelsohn and fellow senior, epeeist Anne Nguyen, both managed two wins.

Columbia, Harvard and Penn all won three meets Sunday. At the Championships' halfway point, they are the only teams still realistically in contention for the Ivy crown. The Crimson won the 2006 Ivy League Women's Fencing title.
