Look To Build on Last Week's Victory
NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Fresh off the heels of victory at last weekend's Dartmouth Invitational, the Yale women's golf team returns home this weekend to compete in the Sept. 21-23 Yale Intercollegiate at The Course at Yale.
With the home course advantage in New Haven, Conn., the Bulldogs will look to continue building momentum as they traverse the fall season.
"I am just really excited for this weekend," said Head Coach Chawwadee Rompothong '00. "The team looks great and I know they want to perform well at home."
Last weekend, the women's team could not have gotten the season off to a better start: while the team clinched the Dartmouth Invitational by two strokes, what was even more suggestive of the season ahead were the individual performances: sophomore Shreya Ghei took home the individual title, while another four golfers—sophomores Marika Liu and Caroline Rouse, and juniors Seo Hee Moon and Sun Gyoung Park—made the top 10.
Another strong performance at the Yale Intercollegiate would send a powerful signal to other collegiate golfing teams around the region. But this weekend's three-round tournament, which kicks off Friday morning, will be no easy competition.
Among the field of 17 that the Bulldogs will compete against this weekend are Ivy League rivals Brown, Dartmouth, Harvard, Penn and Princeton. Harvard and Penn were the only teams to finish ahead of the Bulldogs at last year's Ivy League Championship. Yale (seven) and Princeton (four) are the top two schools in all-time Ivy League titles in women's golf
At last year's Yale Intercollegiate, the women's team finished in fourth place. But the highlight of last year's tournament was Moon's individual medal, which she clinched in a playoff against a Harvard golfer.
"There is always this great pressure to do well with home course advantage and I hope they just go out there and have fun," Rompothong said. "They are a truly talented group of young ladies and if they just play their game, everything will work itself out."
Looking ahead, after the Yale Intercollegiate the team will compete in the Sept. 28-30 Nittany Lion Invitational at the Penn State Blue Course in State College, Pa., the Oct. 7-9 Lady Pirate Intercollegiate at the Greenville Country Club in Greenville, N.C., and then the Oct. 20-21 Lehigh Invitational at the Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pa.
