Second-Place Finish for Bulldogs, Wongwaiwate
Three Yale Golfers in Top 10
STATE COLLEGE, Pa.—A trio of Bulldogs registered top-10 finishes as the Yale women's golf team claimed second place at the Sept. 27-29 Nittany Lion Invitational in State College, Pa., on Sunday.
Freshman Sandy Wongwaiwate led the way, shooting rounds of 72-70-74 across the three days of the tournament to finish in a tie for second with an Even score. She was four strokes behind tournament medalist Jennifer Ha from Kent State.
The Yale team shot 294 overall on Sunday as they played through the par-72 6,263-yard Penn State Blue Course, finishing at +13. That was four strokes behind tournament champion Kent State, which charged home to close at +7, but 10 strokes ahead of defending champion Penn State, who finished in third place.
It was a strong team effort that secured the Bulldogs' second-place result. Not far behind Wongwaiwate was fellow freshman Elisabeth Bernabe, who carded +3 for the tournament to finish in sixth.
The third Yale golfer in the top 10, junior Marika Liu notched up a 72 on Sunday to finish three strokes further back at +6, in a tie for seventh.
Sunday's result is a substantial improvement upon the Bulldogs' result at last year's Nittany Lion Invitational, where they finished ninth. The result also adds to Yale's momentum this season: the second-place finish comes on the heels of tournament victories at the Dartmouth Invitational and Yale Intercollegiate in past weeks.
The Bulldogs will be closer to home for their next competition, the Sacred Heart Fall Classic. It will take place on Oct. 20-21 at the Great River Golf Club in Milford, Conn.
