NEW HAVEN, Conn.—After an inter-squad scrimmage that saw strong play all around, the Yale women's Golf Team will travel to the Great River Golf Club in Milford, Conn., for the Oct. 20-21 Sacred Heart Fall Classic.
The tournament will feature a handful of teams, most of them hailing from the Northeast region. The field includes second runner-up of last year's tournament, Boston University, and in-state competitor and host Sacred Heart, among others. Golfers will play two rounds on the semi-private golf course, known for its complex winds and abundant water hazards.
Yale will look to continue its strong start to the season. The team has finished in the top two in its first three tournaments. In its most recent intercollegiate bout, the Nittany Lion Invitational, Yale placed second behind strong play from freshman Sandy Wongwaiwate, who herself finished just four strokes behind the tournament medalist. Wongwaiwate also came in second at the Oct. 12-13 F.A. Borsodi Student Championship, an inter-squad competition. Standout freshman Elisabeth Bernabe won that event, with a two-day score of 148. Sophomore Deanna Song rounded out the top three, shooting 153.
The Bulldogs have been bolstered by strong play from top to bottom this season. Junior Marika Liu finished third for Yale and seventh overall at the Penn State tournament, while senior Seo Hee Moon placed fourth for Yale at that tournament, and tied for second overall at the Sept. 20-22 Yale Intercollegiate.
Although Yale did not compete at last year's Sacred Heart Fall Classic, the team will look to make its mark on the strong field at this year's tournament.
Golfers will tee off between 11:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, and the tournament will conclude with a 9:00 a.m. shotgun start the following day.
