  • Yale Honors Six Seniors and One Team with Annual Awards at Senior Student-Athlete Reception

    Six seniors and one team were honored by the Yale Athletics Department with awards at the annual senior student-athlete reception Saturday afternoon at the Lanman Center in Payne Whitney Gymnasium. The women's fencing team earned the Brodhead Award for highest team grade point average. Travis Henry (Lauderdale Lakes, Fla.) of the football team and Allison Mak (Richmond Hill, Ont.) of the gymnastics team were the recipients of the Ford Student-Athlete Community Outreach Award. Chris Labosky (Tallmadge, Ohio) of the men’s cross country and track & field teams and Julia Weiser (Houston, Texas) of the field hockey team were the recipients of the Kiphuth Student-Athlete Distinction Award. Stephanie Colantonio (Watertown, Mass.) of the field hockey team and Ben Wescoe (La Jolla, Calif.) of the men’s golf team were the recipients of the Meyer Humanitarian Award.

    At the team’s end-of-year banquet held last week, the Yale women’s gymnastics team honored several team members for their outstanding performance over the course of the year.
  • Yang Named 2010-2011 Gymnastics Captain

    At their annual banquet last week, the Yale women’s gymnastics team announced that junior Sherry Yang will serve as captain for the upcoming 2010-2011 season. Yang will be the 35th captain in the 39-year history of the program.
  • Kivisto Places Eighth at NCAA Regionals

    With a score of 38.650, senior captain Brigitte Kivisto finished eighth at the NCAA Regional Championships on Saturday afternoon. Kivisto, the ECAC Gymnast of the Year, was the only Ivy League gymnast to qualify for the meet, which was held at Penn State’s Recreation Hall.
  • Kivisto to Compete at NCAA Regionals Saturday

    Senior captain Brigitte Kivisto travels to Penn State on Saturday to compete in the all-around competition at the NCAA Regional Championship. Kivisto, the ECAC Gymnastics Athlete of the Year, was one of six individuals to receive an at-large bid for the all-around competition at the meet. Additionally, six full teams and one individual specialist for each event qualified for the competition.
  • Seven Gymnasts Named to ECAC All-Academic Team

    Seven Yale gymnasts were named to the ECAC All-Academic Team following the conclusion of Yale's regular season with a sixth-place finish at the ECAC Championships. In order to qualify for the award, gymnasts must have a 3.2 cumulative GPA.
  • Kivisto Qualifies for NCAA Regionals

    With a regional qualifying average of 38.785, senior captain Brigitte Kivisto was awarded a spot in the all-around competition at the NCAA Regional Championships, to be held on Saturday, Apr. 10 at Penn State. The announcement caps an amazing week for Kivisto, who was named the ECAC Gymnastics Athlete of the Year on Friday night and placed second in the all-around competition at the ECAC Championships on Saturday. Kivisto, who won the Ivy Classic earlier in the season, is the only Ivy League gymnast to qualify for NCAA Regionals.

    Senior captain Brigitte Kivisto was named Athlete of the Year at the 2010 ECAC end of the year awards banquet on Friday in Philadelphia. She was selected by the head coaches of the seven schools that participate in ECAC gymnastics.
  • Mak Wins Balance Beam, Yale Sixth at ECACs

    Senior Allison Mak successfully defended her conference title on the balance beam at the ECAC Championships, helping the Bulldogs to a score of 189.5000 and a sixth-place finish overall. Mak was not the only Yale gymnast to reach the podium, as senior Brigitte Kivisto finished second in the all-around competition and freshman Lindsay Andsager tied for third on the uneven parallel bars. With a score of 192.725, Towson won the meet for the sixth consecutive year, besting Cornell, the nearest competitor, by 1.925 points.
  • Bulldogs Ready for ECAC Championships

    After finishing fourth with a score of 188.700 last week at Maryland, the Yale gymnastics team travels to Philadelphia for its final meet of the season, the ECAC Championships. Seven teams will be competing at the meet hosted by Temple, the four Ivies with gymnastics programs as well as Temple, Towson, and William and Mary.
  • Trevino Receives ECAC Coaches' Choice Award

    Sophomore Talis Trevino has been named this week’s recipient of the ECAC’s Coaches’ Choice Award. Trevino finished 13th in the floor exercise, scoring a career-high 9.700, at Maryland on Saturday. She also competed on the uneven parallel bars, scoring an 8.500.
  • Gymnasts Place Fourth at Maryland

    The Yale gymnastics team finished fourth with a score of 188.700 against top-level competition at Maryland in a meet won by No. 17 Auburn, which finished with a score of 196.225. The host Terrapins finished second with a 195.825, while George Washington placed third with a score of 192.100.
  • Gymnasts Travel to Maryland for Saturday Quad Meet

    One week after producing a fourth-place finish and its highest team score of the season, a 191.000, at Rutgers, the Yale gymnastics team travels to Maryland for a quad meet. Joining the Bulldogs and the Terrapins will be No. 17 Auburn and George Washington.
  • Mak to Receive Seton Ivy Award from City of New Haven

    Senior gymnast Allison Mak has been selected to receive a Seton Ivy Award from the City of New Haven for her contributions to the improved relations between Yale and New Haven. The Seton Ivy and Elm Awards were established in 1979 by Fenmore Seton ’38 and his wife Phyllis to honor outstanding efforts to expand the partnership between Yale and New Haven made by both members of the New Haven community and Yale staff, faculty, and students.
  • Kivisto Captures Third Straight ECAC Gymnast of the Week Honor

    Senior captain Brigitte Kivisto has been named ECAC Gymnast of the Week for the third straight week following her performance at Rutgers. Kivisto won the all-around competition with a career-high score of 39.075, pacing the Bulldogs’ to their highest team score in over two years. The meet also marked Kivisto’s fourth all-around competition victory in the last four weeks.
  • Bulldogs Top Season-High Score, Finish Fourth

    Despite producing its highest team score of the season, a 191.000, the Yale gymnastics team finished fourth at a quad meet hosted by Rutgers on Saturday. Towson edged Bridgeport 193.400-193.200 for first place, while Rutgers finished third with a score of 192.675. Despite the loss, however, there were plenty of highlights for the Bulldogs, as Yale gymnasts won two events and the all-around competition.

    Following her performance in Sunday’s win over Springfield and Rhode Island College, senior captain Brigitte Kivisto was named ECAC Gymnast of the Week for the second straight week. This week marks the third time this season and the fourth time of her career that Kivisto has won the award.
  • Gymnasts Defeat Springfield, Rhode Island College

    The Yale gymnastics team topped Springfield and Rhode Island College this afternoon in a dominant fashion, scoring a season-high 189.950. Springfield was second and Rhode Island College third with scores of 182.625 and 159.625 respectively. Bulldog gymnasts took the top two places in every event as well as the top three places in the all-around competition.

    The Yale gymnastics team resumes competition this Sunday at Springfield College for a three-way meet with Springfield and Rhode Island College after finishing fourth at the Ivy Classic last weekend. At the Ivy Classic, won by Cornell, senior Brigitte Kivisto took home the floor exercise and all-around titles, earning an ECAC Co-Gymnast of the Week honor in the process.

    Following her victories on the floor exercise and in the all-around competition at last Sunday’s Ivy Classic, senior captain Brigitte Kivisto was named ECAC Co-Gymnast of the Week, sharing the award with Penn’s Dana Bonincontri. This week marks the second time of the season and the third time of her career that Kivisto has received conference Gymnast of the Week honors.

    Senior captain Brigitte Kivisto became the 13th gymnast in Yale history to win the all-around competition at the Ivy Classic as Yale finished fourth with a score of 187.500. Cornell successfully defended their 2009 title with a score of 192.550. Brown and Penn finished second and third with scores of 189.675 and 189.550 respectively.
  • Gymnastics Prepares for Sunday's Ivy Classic

    After finishing second to Bridgeport with a score of 188.300 in a three-way meet on Senior Day last Saturday, the Yale gymnastics team travels to Brown on Sunday for the Ivy Classic. In addition to Brown, the Bulldogs will face Penn and Cornell, the two other Ivy League schools with gymnastics programs. Yale is searching for its 15th Ivy title, and its first since 2005.
  • Yale Places Second as Kivisto, Mak Honored

    The Yale women’s gymnastics team fell to Bridgeport but defeated Southern Connecticut State at John J. Lee Amphitheater. Bridgeport, ranked second nationally in Division III, scored a 190.700, while Yale finished with a 188.300. SCSU was third with a 187.200. The meet, which was the Bulldogs’ last home competition of the season, served as Senior Day, and seniors Brigitte Kivisto and Allison Mak were honored.

  • Yale Athletics to Host WBCA Pink Zone Event This Saturday

    The Yale University Athletics Department will be hosting a Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Pink Zone event this Saturday, Feb. 20, at Payne Whitney Gymnasium in New Haven. The festivities, which will raise money for the Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven to be designated for breast cancer research, will begin at 10 a.m. and will include a Yale gymnastics meet (1 p.m.) and women’s basketball game (7 p.m.) as a part of the day-long event.
  • Yale Posts Season-High Score, Defeats Springfield

    The Yale Gymnastics team produced its highest score of the season in a 188.925-183.000 defeat of Springfield College this afternoon at John J. Lee Amphitheater. The Bulldogs topped their previous season best of 187.775, scored in a dual meet against Penn, by over a point. In the process, the Bulldogs scored season-best team totals in three of four events. Coach Barbara Tonry, who was pleased with the team’s performance, said that a season-high score was one of the Bulldogs’ goals coming into the meet.
  • Feld Wins Second ECAC Rookie of the Week Award

    Freshman Tara Feld earned league honors for the second week in a row following Yale’s performance at a five-team meet held at Southern Connecticut State. Feld was named ECAC Rookie of the Week after leading the Bulldogs to a runner-up finish.
  • Yale to face Springfield on Saturday

    After traveling across New Haven to face Southern Connecticut State last weekend, the Yale women’s gymnastics team returns home to face Springfield College on Saturday. Yale has not faced Springfield since 2008, when the Bulldogs defeated the Pride 185.225-182.400 at a six-way meet.
  • Bulldogs Place Second of Five at SCSU

    With a score of 186.925, the Yale gymnastics team finished second of five at a meet hosted by Southern Connecticut State. The Bulldogs bested their cross-town rival by 0.175 points, falling only to Bridgeport, who won the competition with a score of 189.600. Yale also defeated Ithaca and Rhode Island College at the meet.
