NEW HAVEN, Conn. - After defeating Penn 187.775-179.600 in its first home competition of the year last Saturday, the Yale gymnastics team doesn’t have to travel far for its meet on Saturday, as the Bulldogs face cross-town rival Southern Connecticut State and Ithaca on SCSU’s New Haven campus.

Last season, Yale fell to SCSU at John J. Lee Amphitheater, but the Bulldogs will be sending what is essentially an entirely different lineup from last season’s to face the Owls last year. In 2009, junior Sherry Yang, who now competes in three events for the Bulldogs, was unable to compete against SCSU due to injuries, and Brigitte Kivisto, last week’s ECAC Gymnast of the week and Yale’s top performer in the all-around competition, only competed on the balance beam as she recovered from injuries as well. The Bulldogs also boast a talented class of four freshmen this year, including Tara Feld, who broke the Yale record on the vault last week against Penn.

Last week, SCSU finished first at the Brockport Invitational, defeating four other teams with a score of 187.275. The week before, the Owls received their only defeats of the year, falling to Brown and New Hampshire at a four-way meet at Brown.

Ithaca, ranked fifth in the nation among Division III schools, is also off to a hot start. After falling to Brockport in their season-opening meet, the Bombers defeated Rhode Island College and Springfield College, two schools that Yale will see later this season, in consecutive meets.

Competition starts at 1:00 p.m. at SCSU’s Moore Field House.
