• Yabut Named Gymnastics Captain

    At the team’s recent banquet, the Yale gymnastics team announced that Mia Yabut has been named captain for the 2011-2012 season. Yabut, from Nashville, Tenn., attended St. Cecilia Academy and competed for Tri-Star Gymnastics.

    With a score of 186.225, the Yale gymnastics team concluded its season with a seventh-place at the ECAC Championship, hosted by Brown. Cornell won the competition with a score of 191.675, avenging a loss to Penn at the Ivy Classic earlier in the year. Penn finished second with a score of 191.175. Towson, which had won six straight ECAC Championships entering the meet, finished third.

    The Yale women’s gymnastics team will travel to Providence, R.I., on Saturday for the ECAC Championship, the team’s final meet of the season. The Bulldogs fell to ECAC rival Towson last weekend with a score of 183.600, their lowest score since January. At ECAC’s, Yale looks to rebound from last Saturday’s performance and build on its sixth-place finish in last year’s conference championship meet.

    In its only night meet of the year, Yale fell to both Rutgers and host Towson, scoring a 183.600. The Tigers won the meet with a 193.400, while the Scarlet Knights finished second with a 190.350.

    The Yale women’s gymnastics team finished fourth at Rutgers this afternoon with a score of 186.000, improving over last week’s performance at the Ivy Classic. The host Scarlet Knights won with a score of 194.350, followed by Cornell and Southern Connecticut State. West Chester finished fifth.

    After a fourth-place finish at the Ivy Classic last weekend in Philadelphia, the Yale gymnastics team resumes regular-season competition on Saturday with a trip to Rutgers, where the Bulldogs will see a set of mostly familiar faces. Yale has already competed against Rutgers, Southern Connecticut State, and Cornell earlier this year. Division-II West Chester will also be competing.

The Bulldogs will be looking to avenge a fourth-place finish at last year’s Ivy Classic, which was won by Cornell.

    Leading by only four-tenths of a point going into the final event, the Yale gymnastics team used an extremely strong floor rotation to hold off Southern Connecticut State by a score of 187.450-185.850. The Bulldogs saw multiple career-high individual scores on the way to a season-best team total, most notably by senior captain Sherry Yang begin_of_the_skype_highlighting     end_of_the_skype_highlighting, who posted career records on both the vault and the floor exercise in her last home competition. Yang, Yale’s only senior, was honored after the meet during the Bulldogs’ Senior Day festivities.

    The Yale gymnastics team finished second of three teams at Saturday’s Bulldog Invitational, scoring a 184.350 overall. Temple won the meet with a 191.600, while Springfield College scored a 178.950. The Bulldogs nearly produced their best score of the season despite competing without Tara Feld, who missed the meet due to injury. Feld, who normally competes at least three events for Yale was replaced by Lindsay Andsager and Ashley O’Connor.

The meet marked the first competition for Yale’s four freshmen, Maren Hopkins, Ashley O’Connor, Nicole Tay, and Tabitha Tay.     The Yale gymnastics team opens its season Sunday at 1:00 p.m. with an away dual meet against Springfield College. Traditionally one of the top teams in Division III, the Pride, which finished last season ranked third nationally among Division III teams, will also open its season on Sunday. Yale and Springfield met once last year, with Yale winning 188.925-183.000 at the New Haven dual meet. Then-freshman Tara Feld took the all-around competition as Yale gymnasts won every event.

Despite losing two talented seniors, 2011 ECAC Gymnast of the Year Brigitte Kivisto ‘10 and two-time ECAC balance beam champion Allison Mak ‘10, the Bulldogs will approach their season with improvement in mind.

    Five Yale gymnasts have been honored by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches as Academic All-Americans. To be honored, gymnasts must have a GPA of 3.5 or above. Additionally, the team ranked 14th nationally and first among Ivy League programs with an average 3.440 GPA.
