NEW HAVEN, Conn. – At the team's recent banquet, the Yale gymnastics team announced that Mia Yabut has been named captain for the 2011-2012 season. Yabut, from Nashville, Tenn., attended St. Cecilia Academy and competed for Tri-Star Gymnastics.
A two-time state champion in both the uneven parallel bars and the all-around, Yabut's early career at Yale was hampered by injuries, forcing her to miss her entire freshman season. As a sophomore, Yabut returned to compete in the balance beam for two meets.
This year, she was prepared to compete in a full lineup of events before falling in practice and suffering an unusual foot injury which forced her to wear a boot. After she was forced out of competition yet again, head coach Barbara Tonry said that Yabut was still an active member of the team, cheering and supporting her teammates at every meet and practice. She was finally cleared to dismount one day before the Ivy Classic. Despite having only a single day to practice her full routine, Yabut competed in the uneven parallel bars, scoring a 9.225 and providing a huge boost to the Bulldogs' bar lineup. By the end of the year, Yabut also competed on the vault, scoring a 9.5 at the season-ending ECAC Championships.
Yabut called her election an honor, saying that "I'm so excited and honored to captain the team next year. I have a tremendous amount of confidence in our ability to succeed, and I hope to relay that sentiment throughout the season next year."
In addition to the announcement of the team's new captain, four Yale gymnasts were honored by the coaching staff. Yabut, Tara Feld, and Stephanie Goldstein were given Outstanding Contribution Awards for their performances in 2011, while current captain Sherry Yang was given the Captains Award for Leadership.
