  • Yale Honors Six Seniors and One Team with Annual Awards at Senior Reception

    Yale Honors Six Seniors and One Team with Annual Awards at Senior Reception Six seniors and one team were honored by the Yale Athletics Department with awards at the annual senior student-athlete reception Saturday afternoon at the Lanman Center in Payne Whitney Gymnasium. The men’s fencing team earned the Brodhead Award for highest team grade point average. Jeffrey Hatten (Farmington, Conn.) of the men’s golf team and Talis Trevino (Marietta, Ga.) of the gymnastics team were the recipients of the Ford Student-Athlete Community Outreach Award. Adam Fields (Jericho, N.Y.) of the men’s fencing team and Abigail Nunn (Richmond, Va.) of the women’s swimming and diving team were the recipients of the Kiphuth Student-Athlete Distinction Award. Aleca Hughes (Westwood, Mass.) of the women’s ice hockey team and Michael Pratt (Garden City, N.Y.) of the men’s lacrosse team were the recipients of the Meyer Humanitarian Award.

    Gymnasts Receive Awards at End-of-Season Banquet Several members of Yale’s gymnastics team received awards at the team’s end-of-season banquet, held this past Wednesday. Freshmen Joyce Li and Morgan Traina, junior Tara Feld, and seniors Talis Trevino and captain Mia Yabut received special awards for their contributions to the team.

    Goldstein Elected Captain for the 2012-2013 Season This week, the Yale gymnastics team elected junior Stephanie Goldstein as team captain for the 2012-2013 season. Goldstein, a molecular, cellular and developmental biology major from Plano, Texas, has been a consistent performer for the Bulldogs since joining the team as a freshman.

    Winter Academic All-Ivy Announced The Ivy League has released its list of student-athletes selected for 2011-12 Academic All-Ivy honors in its winter sport, and 10 Bulldogs were honored.

    Goldstein Wins ECAC Scholar-Athlete Award and Traina Captures Rookie of the Year Two Yale gymnasts were honored after the ECAC Championships on Saturday with awards for the 2012 season. Junior Stephanie Goldstein won the ECAC Scholar-Athlete Award, and freshman Morgan Traina was named ECAC Rookie of the Year. The gymnasts received their awards in a ceremony following Yale's seventh-place finish at the ECAC Championsips, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania.

    Gymnasts End Season Seventh at ECAC Championships Yale's gymnastics team scored a season-high team total of 191.45 to place seventh at the ECAC Championships, hosted by Penn in the Palestra. The Quakers won with a score of 194.4, besting the runner-up Towson Tigers by a quarter of a tenth. Temple placed third with a 192.45, followed by Cornell, Brown, and William & Mary. The Tribe finished 0.475 tenths ahead of the Bulldogs.

Penn took the title for the second year in a row with a team total of 192.65. Cornell placed second with a 191.875, and Brown was third with a 191.075.

    Traina Named ECAC Rookie of the Week for Third Straight Week For the third straight week, freshman Morgan Traina was named the ECAC Division I Rookie of the Week. Traina received the honor following a standout performance against SCSU over the weekend. Traina set career-high scores on beam, floor and in the all-around at the dual home meet. In addition, all four of her scores counted toward Yale's season-high team total of 190.85.

Freshman Morgan Traina captured the balance beam and all-around titles while junior Tara Feld finished on top on the bars and the floor exercise. Yale gymnasts swept three of the top four spots on every event for an encouraging performance heading into next weekend's Ivy Classic.

    Gymnasts Post Season-High Score at Pink Zone Quad Meet The Bulldogs tumbled to second place in a quad meet at home this afternoon against Bridgeport, Rhode Island College and Springfield College. Yale's team score of 190.4 was a season-high for the team and was only bested by Bridgeport's 193.075. Springfield placed third with a 185.625 and RIC rounded out the competition with a 170.7.

    Freshman Joyce Li Named ECAC Co-Rookie of the Week After a strong performance in the second collegiate meet of her career, freshman Joyce Li was named ECAC Co-Rookie of the Week. Li, who hails from Palo Alto, Calif., showed an impressive competitive maturity at Yale's dual meet against Penn last weekend, in which she placed second in the all-around with a score of 37.725.

The Bulldogs won with a score of 189.475. SCSU, Brockport and Springfield followed with scores of 188.825, 186.475 and 184.55, respectively. Yale’s score beat last year’s season-high of 187.45 and is the highest the team has scored at a season opener in recent memory.

    Gymnastics Team Poised to Begin 2012 Season While the majority of their peers continue to enjoy the winter holiday, the Yale gymnastics team is hard at work in Payne Whitney Gymnasium putting the finishing touches on routines. After placing fourth at the Ivy Classic and seventh at the ECAC Championship in 2011, the Bulldogs are eager to move up in the rankings in 2012. The addition of assistant coach Jason Vonk and four talented freshmen as well as the start of a new weight-training program has the captain and coaches predicting a successful season.
