Gymnasts Face Penn in Ivy, Home Opener
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Following two hard-fought away meets, the Yale gymnastics team returns to Payne Whitney Gym on Sunday to face off against Penn, last year's Ivy champ, in the team's first home contest. Sunday's meet also marks the Bulldog's first competition against an Ivy opponent.
The Bulldogs are looking forward to the chance to score a big win against the reigning Ivy Classic Champions. So far, the Bulldogs have been led by senior captain Stephanie Goldstein as well as dynamic sophomore duo Joyce Li and Morgan Traina.
Sunday's meet will also be the Quakers' third of the 2013 campaign. In its first meet, Penn placed fourth in the George Washington Invitational, a five-team meet featuring Cornell, GW, North Carolina and Temple. Last Saturday, Penn was third in a quad-meet hosted by Rutgers that also included Bridgeport and Ursinus. Both the Bulldogs and the Quakers are looking to make early season statements after their relatively slow starts.
Yale hosted Penn in last year's home and Ivy opener as well. The Bulldogs dropped the meet to the Quakers by a score of 191.225-188.350. Providing standout performances in that meet were current senior Tara Feld and current sophomore Li. Feld won both the vault and floor while Li finished second in the all-around. Penn also got the best of Yale last year when they met in the 2012 Ivy Classic and ECAC Championships, both of which were won by the Quakers.
Competition on Sunday begins at 1:00 p.m. in the John J. Lee Amphitheater inside Payne Whitney Gym.
