NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Fresh off their first meet of the 2014 season, the Yale gymnastics team returns to New Haven on Saturday for its home opener against Penn. This will be the Bulldogs' first dual meet against an Ivy opponent this season and an important test in the lead-up to the Ivy Classic.
Yale faced Penn in an early-season meet last season, falling by a score of 191.525 to 187.900. That meet saw junior Morgan Traina finish tied for second on the bars with a score of 9.625 and second on the beam with a 9.775. Sophomore Brittney Sooksengdao was third on the vault with a 9.650 and senior captain Ashley O'Connor finished fifth on the beam with a 9.500.
The Bulldogs will need strong efforts like those in order to defeat the Quakers in what is sure to be a tight matchup on Saturday. Both teams have competed only once this season and both lost their season-opening match-ups. On Sunday, Yale took on Brown, Minnesota and New Hampshire in the Wildcat Invitational, finishing fourth with a score of 187.500. Penn's first meet was on Saturday against Illinois State and the Quakers were bested 190.400-187.900. These similar scores in each team's season opener indicate that Saturday's meet is likely to be an exciting one.
The meet will take place in the John J. Lee Amphitheater in Payne Whitney Gym and is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
